iPad Mini With Retina Display "TECHNOLOGY"

It's amazing to think that, just a year ago, the iPad Mini was positioned as a smaller "budget" iPad without as much power as the 9.7-inch version. Videos look great, too, but the smaller screen size and extra letterboxing mean wide-screen movies are still pretty small. The new iPad Air lets you do more than ever, in more places than ever.Learn more Everyone has something to share. This actually toughens up the display module and eliminates dust under the glass panel. It has the same basic compact design as last year, which the iPad Air now also adopts: thin side bezels, a flat back, and a generally wafer-thin, metal-and-glass look. The Bad A starting price of $399 places it well above the small-tablet competition, and adding more storage or LTE makes it even more expensive. Because iOS 7 and iPad mini weren’t just designed to work together, they were designed to enhance one another.

Everyone has something to share. iPad mini comes with great built-in apps for the everyday things you do, like checking email and surfing the web. Which is a major headache when you open up the device to repair it Tom Chai, Nov 13 2013 Keep in mind this is purely a REPAIRABILITY score, not a review of the engineering quality, usability, or a reflection on its performance-to-weight ratio. iPad apps are like no other. Edit Step 11 ¶ Jack be nimble, Jack be slick—remove that headphone jack right quick! The tiny ICs sprinkled around the headphone jack are the same ones found in the Air. He found that the Retina Mini's grayscale was great, and its contrast in the same ballpark as the others, but its color accuracy and saturation weren't as impressive.

In fact, you could easily call the iPad Mini with Retina Display a shrunken-down clone of the new iPad Air : it has exactly the same specs as its larger sibling -- or, very nearly. I wouldn't let a low iFixIt repairability score deter me from purchasing the product, but would certainly, based on this teardown, think twice about attempting a repair on it myself. The Bottom Line The new iPad Mini somehow shrinks down the iPad Air into an even more compact package, sacrificing nearly nothing. They still believe the pentalobe screws are bad for repairs.

I tried out "Cloud Atlas," and the movie at least looked extra-sharp, but the viewing space on a Mini can get cramped.

It's a big improvement, indeed. The new iPad Air lets you do more than ever, in more places than ever.Learn more Everyone has something to share. Here are the runes on the black box: 3.75 V, 24.3 Whr, 6471 mAh—a huge bump over the 16.3 Whr battery seen in the previous Mini. Get closer, and you'll see the difference right away: finer resolution, and even color quality, are improved. And over 500,000 other incredible iPad apps are just a tap away in the App Store.2 With apps like these, iPad mini can do just about anything — which means you can, too.

Glue inhibits repair, and that is bad.

I would; the new Retina Mini is a far better product overall than it was a year ago. It'd bind in place as well as glue and be easier to remove than glue or screws.

Instead of all that glue, Apple should look into using high-quality Velcro.

(Who doesn't love a little alliteration?) We've never opened an iPad Mini with Retina Display before, but we're confident this kit is up to the challenge. It just so happens that an extra 0.3 mm is also the difference between an iPad and the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9", which, at just 7.8 mm thick, features an incredibly easy opening procedure, and a repairability score of 7 out of 10. Learn more about built-in apps Learn more about the App Store. In spite of those specs, Apple still pegs the battery life at 10 hours.

But, the Retina Mini's crisp, bright display still looks awfully good for just about everything, and unless you're comparing photos or icons side-by-side, you probably won't miss that lost saturation. To help you be even more creative and productive, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are now available for free. In more locations than ever. So you get incredible power in a device you can take with you wherever you go. Mainly, it comes down to a size preference, and value proposition. This little bit of face-to-FaceTime is still rated at 1.2 MP, 720p, and is marked 821-1752-A. It seems we've found the source of the Retina's thicker skin. I think the Retina iPad Mini is a terrific product and hands down is better in all other categories (build quality, performance/weight, software ecosystem, battery life, etc.) when compared to it's competitors. And they come in a whole range of colors. iPad mini is powered by the new A7 chip with 64-bit architecture.

In fact, after reading this (and other iFixIt Apple product teardowns), I would consider spending a little extra on the AppleCare warranty to avoid making a complete mess of a well constructed (but hard to repair) device. Edit Step 3 ¶ Our Opening Kit ought to offer oodles of optimism to fearless fixers; iOpeners impart inroads into iPads. Because they’re designed just for iPad, they look amazing and use every pixel of the beautiful display. It just so happens that an extra 0.3 mm is also the difference between an iPad and the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9", which, at just 7.8 mm thick, features an incredibly easy opening procedure, and a repairability score of 7 out of 10. Out too go the dual voice boxes. He has previously written for both mainstream and technology enthusiast publications including Wired, Esquire.com, Men's Journal, and Maxim, and regularly appears on TV and radio talking tech trends. The less the score, the more performance to weight ratio and the more perfectly crafted and engineered a device is. Edit Step 5 ¶ It looks like Apple has been doing some pruning. They automatically wake it when opened and put it to sleep when closed. Mike Perry, Nov 13 2013 · Reply. I wouldn't let a low iFixIt repairability score deter me from purchasing the product, but would certainly, based on this teardown, think twice about attempting a repair on it myself. The new dual-cell battery design means more edges with more glue, and requires more muscle to remove.

Screw your stupid scoring system.

But, in terms of colors and overall picture quality, there is a difference. It also has an M7 co-processor, which helps track motion and could be used for motion-aware apps and to reduce strain on battery life. And, whether you need to pay up for a tablet this powerful. The LCD and glass are not fused together and can be replaced independently. And I actually support the trend of bonding the glass to the LCD. And they come in a whole range of colors. Teeny-tiny screws can be easily misplaced if you're not careful. But, it's that extra size that gives it a huge edge over smaller tablets for running larger iPad apps in semi-miniature. Copious amounts of adhesive hold many components in place—front glass, battery, front camera, back camera, ribbon cables—making repair extremely difficult. iPad mini comes with great built-in apps for the everyday things you do, like checking email and surfing the web. And the Wi-Fi + Cellular model supports more LTE bands than ever, so you can make quick, easy connections the world over.3. When David and I looked at a series of test photos, the color differences between the four tablets were apparent, and in highly saturated shots -- particularly a close-up of some red, purple, and orange flowers -- the Mini seemed more washed out and less punchy. And over 500,000 other incredible iPad apps are just a tap away in the App Store.2 With apps like these, iPad mini can do just about anything — which means you can, too. Edit Step 9 ¶ If at first you don't succeed, (heat and) pry, pry again. Learn more iPad apps are like no other. We suspect the extra juice is being funneled into the swanky new display. Other 7-inch tablets routinely hit 1080p or better resolution, such as the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX , with 1,920x1,200-pixel resolutions and 323 pixels per inch. A new perspective, an idea, a verse to add to the world’s story.

Here's the full results of his tests if you're curious. I would have given that only 2 scores too But the Ifixit guys are a bit old schooled. Edit Step 13 ¶ An exploratory plastic opening tool reveals the only thing stuck under there are bad memories from last time. Now the only question is, do you want to pay up for it?. In fact, after reading this (and other iFixIt Apple product teardowns), I would consider spending a little extra on the AppleCare warranty to avoid making a complete mess of a well constructed (but hard to repair) device. So much for 'proprietary' screws. Put the non-Retina and Retina models side by side, and it's hard to tell them apart. Using two antennas instead of one and MIMO technology, iPad mini delivers twice the Wi-Fi performance of its predecessor. Edit Step 7 ¶ With its worldly ties severed, the front glass/digitizer assembly practically floats away. And with new features like smarter multitasking, Control Center, and AirDrop, iOS 7 makes the experience of using iPad mini even more beautiful and simple.

Because they’re designed just for iPad, they look amazing and use every pixel of the beautiful display. iPads are a pain in the !@# to repair, especially the glued up part and the open-up-and-wreck-up foam gasket around the LCD.

These cryptically marked speakers offer scant clues as to their manufacturing origin.

The new iPad Mini has a 2,048x1,526-pixel Retina Display that's exactly the same resolution as the larger iPad, and a far faster 64-bit A7 CPU that parallels what's in the iPhone 5S and iPad Air, plus that M7 co-processor. And with new features like smarter multitasking, Control Center, and AirDrop, iOS 7 makes the experience of using iPad mini even more beautiful and simple. Hidden screws mean you'll need to be very diligent when trying to remove internal components. And, the Retina Display already looked good on the Air's 9.7-inch display. Every photo is incredibly detailed and vibrant, and every line of text is remarkably crisp and clear.

They also fold to create a great stand for reading, viewing, and typing. iPad mini keeps you connected faster than ever. So they don’t just work smart, they look smart.4 It’s unbelievably thin and light, but packed with incredible power.

This year? There aren't really any technology drawbacks at all compared with what you get in the full-size iPad, except for a bit of reduction in screen quality and overall system speed (see below), but trust us: the Retina Mini's really like a tiny Air. It's more expensive than before, but it's also the perfect smaller tablet. In more locations than ever. Using two antennas instead of one and MIMO technology, iPad mini delivers twice the Wi-Fi performance of its predecessor. To fight the dark magics (well, adhesives) binding this battery, we call upon the awesome powers of the iOpener once more. These LCD and digitizer cable connectors aren't fooling anybody—tweeze away that bracket and pop off the connectors, and the LCD is home free.

I think the Retina iPad Mini is a terrific product and hands down is better in all other categories (build quality, performance/weight, software ecosystem, battery life, etc.) when compared to it's competitors. Because they’re designed just for iPad, they look amazing and use every pixel of the beautiful display. The Good The iPad Mini with Retina Display adds an excellent high-resolution display that rivals the iPad Air's, a far faster A7 processor, and tops it off with improved Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity, with battery life that's as good or better than in last year's Mini. So it’s every bit as advanced as the iPad mini it runs on. Now it's a powerhouse and a top-end tablet. In other shots, however, for example the skin tones in children's faces and a black-and-white skull, the Mini's excellent grayscale helped it look as good as the others at times, and more accurate than the Fire HDX in particular. But what's most impressive, and hard to truly appreciate at times, is that there's no drop-off in pixels in the smaller screen size compared with on the Air. So it’s every bit as advanced as the iPad mini it runs on. Without a doubt, if you're a big reader, the massive jump in screen resolution is the most welcome change on this Mini. Performance: Similar to Air, and a huge leap over last year's Mini If you're a gamer or a serious user of apps like video-editing or media-rich programs, you'll notice gigantic speed boost on the Mini, thanks to its leap from an A5 last year to an A7 this year. iPad camera specs seem to have plateaued for the time being. Overall we found ourselves liking the Air the best, followed by the Nexus 7 and then the Fire, with the Mini in last place. iPad mini with Retina display is amazing to hold. It wasn't bad, just not as good as we'd expect. Announced October 22nd and released November 12th, 2013, the iPad mini with Retina Display has all the pixels of the iPad Air in a smaller 7.9" form factor. It’s unbelievably thin and light, but packed with incredible power.

And over 500,000 other incredible iPad apps are just a tap away in the App Store.2 With apps like these, iPad mini can do just about anything — which means you can, too. Now, there are no limitations.

Edit Step 4 ¶ We begin removing the titular update to this Mini: the Retina Display. Other than that, nothing's really changed in the iPad Mini's form. While it's technically a bit heavier than the older model -- 0.3mm in thickness, and a 23-gram difference for the Wi-Fi version or a 29-gram difference for the LTE model, putting it at 0.73 or 0.75 pound, respectively -- but you'd never know from holding it. And, it's still that same compact-but-not-quite-pocket-size form (unless you have very large, deep pockets).

A new perspective, an idea, a verse to add to the world’s story. If a nondescript speaker falls in a forest, can anyone hear it?. This actually toughens up the display module and eliminates dust under the glass panel. The redesigned Smart Cover and new Smart Case are a perfect fit for iPad mini. The Mini's 2,048x1,536 resolution amounts to 326 pixels per inch, offering even better pixel density over a larger amount of screen real estate. They also fold to create a great stand for reading, viewing, and typing. Not having Touch ID is a bit of a letdown, but it would have been an utter luxury on a small tablet like this. It seems we've found the source of the Retina's thicker skin. They automatically wake it when opened and put it to sleep when closed. And the Mini's screen is 7.9 inches with a closer-to-square 4x3 aspect ratio -- not the 7-inch wide-screen form factor of the aforementioned Google and Amazon tablets. I accepted its limitations in exchange for its form. That's fine by us, but it could prove disappointing for the dozens of people who enjoy tablet photography. daviet86, Nov 13 2013 · Reply iPads are a pain in the !@# to repair, especially the glued up part and the open-up-and-wreck-up foam gasket around the LCD. They're likely audio amplifiers, but they aren't very chatty about their origins. With higher resolution than an HDTV, it’s stunning — on a whole new scale.

To the surprise of no one, we find affixed dual Broadcom BCM5976 touchscreen controllers—much like we've seen in a host of recent Apple products including the iPad Air and iPhones 5 and 5s.

The battery is not soldered to the logic board or other components. Edit Step 17 ¶ iPad Mini Retina Display Repairability: 2 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair). It has a better front-facing camera than the last Mini, an improved MIMO Wi-Fi antenna (but no 802.11ac wireless), and improved LTE connectivity internationally for LTE models, plus an extra microphone on the back that auto adjusts and emphasizes environmental audio based on whether you're using the rear- or front-facing camera (for clearer FaceTime calls, for instance).

First to go is the front-facing camera. The Bottom Line The new iPad Mini somehow shrinks down the iPad Air into an even more compact package, sacrificing nearly nothing. Edit Step 8 ¶ We've reached the source of power. iPad mini with Retina display is amazing to hold.

Scott Stein is a senior editor covering iOS and laptop reviews, mobile computing, video games, and tech culture. Retina Display: Worth the wait Yes. It's more expensive than before, but it's also the perfect smaller tablet. On the flip side, the usual 5 MP rear-facing camera. But, it's a surprisingly subtle upgrade from a distance. Now the screwdrivers are $1 each. In fact, after reading this (and other iFixIt Apple product teardowns), I would consider spending a little extra on the AppleCare warranty to avoid making a complete mess of a well constructed (but hard to repair) device. In a lot of ways, the Retina Mini is much like the iPhone 5S, except it lacks a fingerprint-sensing Touch ID home button; this year's iPad home button still has a square on it, and won't do anything with your fingerprint except collect a slight smudge. So much for 'proprietary' screws. But over the last year, the Mini ended up cementing itself as my personal iPad of choice. Learn more Don’t let its size fool you. And I actually support the trend of bonding the glass to the LCD. Like the iPhone's leap to Retina, or the iPad's, it's a level of detail you'll miss after you get used to it, rather than one you'll notice right away. It’s unbelievably thin and light, but packed with incredible power. In this teardown staredown, the Mini blinks first: after offering up the usual gluey resistance, it succumbs and releases its front panel. Edit Step 12 ¶ Following the Formicidaean design choices of the Air, this Mini maxes out on efficiency with dual antennas. I would have given that only 2 scores too But the Ifixit guys are a bit old schooled. Don't sneeze too hard while taking them off. To help you be even more creative and productive, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are now available for free.

What else is new? As I mentioned, the Retina Mini has a 64-bit A7 processor, just like the iPhone 5S and iPad Air. Edit Step 10 ¶ While the new battery cools its jets, we work our way down the hit list of remaining components. iPad apps are like no other. All the pixels in the world couldn't keep our Pro Tech Screwdriver Set at bay.

The ridiculous amount of glue holding iPads together is no longer any surprise—but that doesn't make it okay. With the screen and spec caveats of last year's Mini, it presented a real compromise compared with the big iPad of the time. Side by side with last year's Mini, it's nearly indistinguishable.
